Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Oak Ridge Elementary School Update
Written by Administrator    Thursday, 28 May 2009 08:56    PDF Print E-mail
The Guilford County Department of Public Department has been working diligently to find the cause and the remedy for Oak Ridge Elementary School issues.

For the past 2 weeks, the Department has been working with the school system, advising it on the medical and environmental health effects of fungal and environmental pollutants.  The Department has inspected the school, interviewed teachers, analyzed the HVAC system, reviewed HVAC maintenance schedules, reviewed the consultant reports, collected information from maintenance and facilities staff, attended the school forum, met with the Superintendent and his staff, assembled our Epidemiology team, drafted a survey for parents and teachers, and are preparing to administer the survey at the end of the week.

Guilford County Department of Public Health is very sensitive to the fact that environmental quality can have immediate and long lasting effects on children and adults. Different organisms will cause different symptoms. For this reason, the Department wants to make sure it assists the school system with focusing on the exact culprit. In the natural environment, there are many causes for respiratory symptoms; the Department wants to assess the environment to focus on a resolution.

Public Health to Offer Community Screenings
Written by Administrator    Friday, 15 May 2009 05:19    PDF Print E-mail
The Guilford County Department of Public Health along with some of its community partners is sponsoring a health screening event Saturday, June 13.  The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Hidden Lakes Apartments, located at 5500 Weslo Willow Dr., off W Market Street near I-40 in Greensboro.  The event is free and open to the public.

The Tdap (tetanus-diptheria-pertussis) vaccination, which is required for all rising sixth graders, will be provided by the Department of Public Health.  The Department of Public Health will also offer HIV and syphilis testing.  HIV and syphilis are of particular concern for Guilford County residents.  In 2007, HIV and syphilis rates were higher in Guilford County than in North Carolina as a whole.  In 2008, out of a hundred counties in North Carolina, Guilford County ranked second for the number of syphilis cases and fifth for the number of cases of HIV disease.  The Centers for Disease Control recommends that those at risk for HIV get tested at least every year.

Piedmont Health Services and Sickle Cell Agency will offer cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure screenings, as well as breast health screenings.  Moses Cone Health System will have dieticians on site to provide nutritional advice.  Job Links will have a booth about employment opportunities.

These screenings are part of a larger effort on the part of the Guilford County Department of Public Health to offer health services outside of the clinical setting.  “Taking our clinical services into the community can help break down some barriers like access to care,” states Merle Green, Health Director.

For more information on this event, or for general health information, visit the Guilford County Department of Public Health website at www.guilfordhealth.org or call 641-7777.
